National Parliament sets up Special Parliamentary Committee on GBV

1 November 2020, Port Moresby: The National Parliament has appointed a Special Committee on Gender-Based Violence in the country. The Committee will be chaired by Alotau MP Charles Abel, Deputy East Sepik Governor Allan Bird and members NCD Governor Powes Parkop, and a 20 member coalition of parliamentary leaders.

Governor Bird in a post on social media said "this is the first time in history for this level of significance to be given to finding solutions for GBV at parliament level".


He thanked the National Government for recognizing the seriousness of violence in hindering the country's development - on behalf of GBV victims.

Mr. Bird has called on every father, uncle, brother, and son to stand with them in making PNG safe for women and girls. The committee set up, coincides with the end of the GBV summit yesterday in Port Moresby.
